Chariton mission: get Eli Hunt to write back 'n' stuff

I e-mailed Eli several days ago, opting for an eye-catching message. As the days passed, I figured I must've just been filtered into the 'loony' folder in his e-mail settings. I thought constrained poetry might be interesting, so I wrote him some haiku:

Hello, Eli Hunt
You don't really know me, but
The wind sings your song

Guess you've gone AWOL
We are all pretty worried
Your silence - so sad

I have one request
Constrained by syllables, yet
with motivation:

Please do write back soon
Tell me the story with these:
Where, Why, When, What, Who

You must be busy
Thanks for reading these haikus
Snow falls on branches.

Running in circles, refreshing my Inbox,
Krystyn

That was on 8 April. Tonight, he wrote back to me:

AWOL is safer.
They must not see me coming.
Theo won't win again.

I am currently looking for suggestions on what to ask him, or what to suggest to him. I will, of course, be continuing this conversation in haiku. :)

Message was edited by: krystyn (changin' the formatting, because haikus deserve pretty linebreaks)

I got a reply from Eli!!!

OK, so this might not help much, but I wrote to Eli and below is what I got. (Note: I didn't disclose that I was part of the Charitons or the Mission. I wanted to handle this delicately... And to give relevance to why I might be writing him. Please give and suggestions on what I should write back to find out where he is or what he knows!)

Dear Mr. Eli Hunt~

My name is Monique, and I'm a student at the University of Queensland here in Australia. I am currently studying for a Masters in International Relations, and I just wanted to say that I am thoroughly impressed by your podcasts on the Ancient Olympics. And since I am studying how different cultures and nations interact, I was especially intrigued by your Pangaea theory.

When the possibility is put out there that maybe Pangaea is our future rather than our past, it is incredible to me to think of how the different cultures and nation-states would interact, once the physical distance no longer separates the world into "us" and "them." Have you come across these possibilities at all?

I know you hail from Britain, but I was wondering if there would be any chance you might be giving a speech or two in Australia? I realise you are quite a busy man, and are busy with research, but it would be wonderful if you did give a lecture somewhere on this island continent.

Thanks for your time!

He responded:

Dear Monique,

I am startled by your email. It strikes me that there is some optimisim in your interpretation of what it would mean to return to a state of Pangaea. I have had a very discouraging week, and so your optimsim breathes some life into my mission.

While I still believe that a new Pangaea would wreak global devastation, purely as a inevitable consequence of geographic upheaval, I can imagine that geoglobal politics would be transformed as well. Perhaps for the better, at least for those who survived.

Thank you for raising an interesting possibility. In fact, now as I ponder it, I wonder if perhaps you have shown me a truth I have been looking for. A motivation I had missed. Well. I am most grateful to you.

Sincerely yours,

Eli Hunt

Me too- Re: I got a reply from Eli!!!

I've been e-mailing him every couple of days and maybe he just got fed up with me!

Dear Jasper,

I appreciate your skepticism. Even if it comes in the form of
suspicion against yours truly. After all, it is the duty of an
investigator of forgotten mysteries to ask difficult questions, and to
brandish skepticism as if it were a weapon. You advance your
skepticism well, and bravely. However, in this case, I can counter it
with both logic and the truth.

I am certain if you think carefully about this conundrum, you will be
able to develop a theory of why an ancient Greek artist would
replicate a Minoan votive. Where did the Minotaur come from, if not
Knossos? Would the Ancient Greeks, labyrinth runners that they are,
not pay secret tribute to the King of Minos, from whose palace the
first labyrinth pattern was derived?

You raise the possibility that the keepers of the musuem at ancient
Olympia may have known something of the labyrinth runners when they
authenticated the work of Pheidias that I found. I was very young, and
they did not discuss their authentication process with me. However, in
hindsight, it is clear that the leap they made would require some
knowledge of the secret agonothetai.

Perhaps there are other researchers, other historians, other
organizations who have been keeping the secret of the lost ring for
decades... or centuries... or longer. Maybe if we find them, we will
be better able to complete our mission to find the lost ring.

However, at the moment, I am concentrating on a different problem. I
am not looking for our allies. I am looking for our antagonists.

I fear that there are counter-agonothetai working as actively as we
are to prevent synchronization of the multiverse. But why? And how?
Who are they, and where do they come from? How long have they been
working on their counter-
mission?

As strange as this may sound, I believe that to defeat them, we may
need to work with them. Know thy enemy. I am hoping to learn the
counter-agonothetai are, and how they might have been able to persuade
agonothetai to join forces with them on their counter-mission...

If you wish to help, your skepticism could be a strength.

If you were skeptical of the allies' missions to synchronize the
multiverse, how would you attack it? What hard questions would you
ask? What assumptions could be faulted in our desire to find the lost
ring and restore the multiverse olympiad?

Sincerely yours,

Eli Hunt

Jasper~

I hope Ariadne is reading this... I think if we combine all these little bits of info (from mine, that he had been disillusioned about the Mission, from yours that he is incredibly concerned about a counter-mission) that we might use this to finally find out more of what he knows.

Eli has been strategic in avoiding any mention of his location... I might try again, but I think he is slowly giving us hints as to his greater knowledge of the situation... who knows, maybe he might be headed for Beijing soon, and stake out the site of the upcoming Olympics...?

In any case, I hope we get more people to post their Eli responses... the puzzle is starting to come together.

Re: Me too- Re: I got a reply from Eli!!!
Hi! I am reading this! And I am very excited to see these emails.

It's good news that Eli is at least communicating with some of us again. Yes, he is being frustratingly vague. As usual.

But I think we've learned a lot already just from these emails.

Has anyone else heard from him?

What do you think is the best way to proceed?

He is ignoring all emails from me, and from all of the other labyrinth travelers. (Diego, Markus, Noriko, Lucie, and Meihui.) But he seems to be comfortable talking to some of our agonothetai. What do you think is the best game plan now for continuing to get information from Eli? Is he on to something? Should we be trying to help?

Re: Me too- Re: I got a reply from Eli!!!

I just sent him one a) telling him I have an educated guess as to who one of the counter-agons might be, b) asking him point-blank what he knows about the fate of the 695 group, since he's mentioned it before, and c) asking if that's what he was investigating in South America.

Eli

What's he doing? Looking for our antagonists. Trying to figure out their motivations. Seeking to infiltrate them.

Really? I don't trust him.

Eli to VictorSueiro
To help your friend Diego and the others with their mission, I must first understand Theo's.

If you wish to help me, we may need to join forces with Theo. We must get closer in order to learn how to stop him and HIS allies.

I get the sense that Eli believes any of us may soon be contacted by Theo and his allies to join them. Or else Eli may find a lead to assist us in contacting them ourselves.

Either way he suggests some of us may need to work with our enemies as double-double agents, to gather information for our cause.

Has anyone been contacted yet?

This part seem to validate or at least give some strength to that theory considering Renata as a traitor, deserter or something like that.

was Renata persuaded away?
Eli probably could answer that for us if he would. It makes me wonder if Renata's group went to Eli back then and he was as cautious and unfrothcoming back then. Maybe what Theo offered them was just the willingness to share informatoin! All Theo would really have to do is be the guy with the answers who acts willing to help to get the agonothetai to follow him.
